By Charles Islas Digital cameras have flooded the amateur and professional market. While a professional must invest several thousand dollars to get a camera with the control and features he needs, the magic number for the average consumer camera seems to float somewhere between $250 to $500 (US). But, what about those cheap, little, pocket sized cameras that you see on late night TV? What are they all about? How can they sell a digital camera for less than $100? And, now that you want one, do they really work?

Yes, they work. The Internet auction sites, my e-mail in-box, and my desktop are full of them. (I just can't resist.) There are dozens of models. They're called Pencams, SpyCams, CleverCams, 3 in One Cams, Pocket Cams, MegaCams, and more. To avoid confusion, I have taken the responsibility to name this category of digital cameras TinyCams. By my definition, TinyCams are cheap, plastic, pocket sized, digital cameras that use CMOS chip technology to capture images and translate them into digital format that you can display on your computer. TinyCams are everywhere.

If I drop one and step on it or leave behind in a restaurant, I can afford to buy a new one!

Now here's the best part. I carry a TinyCam (sometimes two) everywhere! Therefore, I shoot a lot more photos. Sure, some of my shots are junk. Some didn't get enough light, or are out of focus. I learn from those and then simply discard them. And since I don't have to think about exposure, depth of field, or focus, I spend more time composing my shots, trying different angles and being more creative. The result is that some of my photos are really good! And you know what? I'm becoming a better photographer!

What's the best model? Wow that's tough! While I'm writing this article AIPTEK's MegaCam is my choice. But ask me again next week.

Just like an ordinary power strip, it has multiple outlets. However, one of the outlets is a controlling outlet whereas most of the remaining outlets are controlled outlets. To set it up, you simply plug the main equipment, in this case the TV, into the controlling outlet. You then plug the peripherals into the controlled outlets. Now whenever you switch off the TV, the power strip detects the reduced current draw in the controlling outlet and cuts off the power supply to the controlled outlets, thereby switching the peripherals off.

This arrangement can be repeated with a computer and its peripherals. This time, you plug the computer into the controlling outlet and peripherals such as monitor, printer, scanner, speakers, modem etc into the controlled outlets. Now when you switch off the computer or put it on standby, the smart power strip switches off the computer peripherals.

You can see that a smart strip not only protects you from power surges, but also solves the problem of standby power wastage, saving you money and energy.

GPS Can Track Anything

GPS has long been used for fleet tracking by businesses and the military, but now this technology is making its way in our homes in an ever increasing fashion.

The first on the scene with GPS navigation units. These small, compact devices fit inside our cars and helped us find our ways out on the highways and streets of our towns and communities. At first these gadgets were large, pricey, and hard to get. Trilateration is a mathematical principle that takes the known location and distance from three or more objects and calculates the your location. Both GPS fleet tracking and kid tracking work exactly the same way.

A satellite circling the earth in geosynchronous orbit emits a signal that gets picked up a GPS unit. As the unit collects more and more signals from these satellites it plugs them all into a math equation that tells the device's computer where the unit is.

If the unit is a data logger, it takes the position information and stores it in its database and displays the information to the user if it has a visual display. This is your more traditional GPS navigation units.

If the unit is a data pusher, it takes the position information and sends it out via cell phone or radio signal to a central processing center where the information is stored for access via the Internet. This is real-time GPS tracking.

Both types of tracking have their advantages and disadvantages and should be applied in their own special situations. For example, you certainly don't want a data logger if you are trying to get real time information on your teen's driving habits are are trying to keep your child safe from predators. You also are not going to need or want a real time tracking solution for car navigation (unless you are a business too). It just doesn't make sense.

We probably have not even begun to scratch the surface of all the things that can be tracked with GPS as a society, and we have already used it to track many strange and incredible things.
